SMILES COME EASY – This trio of decorated veterans of two major campaigns in the South Pacific are shown here as they relaxed to “bat the breeze” somewhere on an isolated island. In the center is S/Sgt. Harold V. Tydeman, 24, of 2116 Howell street, wounded veteran of the Gilberts and Saipan, and holder of the Bronze Star decoration, sharing in a jaw-wagging interlude with Sgt. Manuel Medina and Charles F. Hoffman, both of New York. All are members of the famous “Fighting Irish” of the Twenty-seventh Division. Sergeant Tydeman, son of the widely known former baseball player, Vince Tydeman, also has two brothers in the armed forces. Medina won the Silver Star medal and Hoffman earned a Bronze Star for heroic service in action.
