Camden Morning Post – February 14, 1877
Of late years the custom of sending valentines has greatly decreased, since in former times on St. Valentine’s day, which, by the way falls on to-day, it was found necessary to employ extra carriers on the mail routes to deliver letters; now the regular force is capable of doing the work.
On this occasion more machine poetry is written than on any other day of the year, and more unchristain [sic] feelings kindled.
The custom of sending valentines is now confined almost exclusively to the youth, and in all likelihood by the next generation it will be almost obsolete.
