Victory Garage

628 Kaighn Ave

aka Earl Scheib’s Auto Paint Shop

The history of the Victory Garage at 7th & Kaighn Avenue is a fascinating tale of business evolution. Established in 1923, it operated under the ownership of Edward Rosen by 1938 and through the late 1940s. Edward and his wife Belle resided at 1273 Magnolia Avenue in Camden’s Parkside neighborhood. The Victory Garage remained a Rosen family enterprise well into the 1960s.

As of the fall of 1962, the Victory Garage operated as a gas station, offering Esso (now Exxon) gasoline. Al Rosen managed the establishment during the 1950s. However, sometime in the 1960s, the business transitioned into a part of the Earl Scheib Auto Paint Shop chain, a well-known name in discount auto painting. Earl Scheib himself became legendary for his television commercials, boasting, “I’ll paint any car, any color, for $29.95. No ups, no extras.” Scheib, who launched his auto painting franchise in Los Angeles in 1937, passed away in 1992.

After the departure of the Scheib company from Camden, the building continued its automotive legacy, operating as an auto body repair shop under the name Earl’s Sons. Following a brief period of vacancy, the building was leased to a new auto repair business in the latter half of 2003, ensuring its continued service to the motorists of Camden.
