Howard W. Carey Jr., known around Camden as “Junie” and “Coach” Carey, was born on October 16, 1939. He attended public schools in Camden and graduated from Camden County College, where he began his career working with the city’s youth.
In 1971, Howard Carey became the Sports Director for the City of Camden. He served on the city’s Planning Committee Advisory Board from 1973 to 1983, during which time he was twice elected Chairman. As the Mayor’s Youth Council Director, he organized Camden’s only Midget Football League, consisting of 10 teams. He was also instrumental in founding a 24-team Little League Baseball circuit and a 20-team Women’s and Men’s Softball League. Additionally, he worked for the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, retiring after 20 years of service.
Howard Carey married Emily Edwards, and they had three children: Ronald “Magic” Carey, Larry, and Sophia. From as early as 1980 until his passing, he lived at 312 South 27th Street in East Camden.
Predeceased by his son Ronald, who died in August 2003, Howard W. Carey passed away on October 10, 2007. He was survived by his wife, two children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
