Morris McMeekin Odell was born June 24, 1915 in Camden, New Jersey, and was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on July 31, 1941. He served as Battalion Chief's Aide and Chief Engineer's Aide before retiring around 1968. He died February 4, 1980.
28th Street runs from the Delaware River south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then to Westfield Avenue, Federal Street and Washington Street. It is North 28th Street above Federal and South 28th below.
Byron Street was part of North Camden's Poet's Row neighborhood, a working-class district whose streets were named for English literary figures. The 200, 300, and 500 blocks developed in the 1890s; the 200 block's north side was destroyed in the catastrophic Poet's Row fire of August 1972.
Former Camden City Commissioner Melbourne F. Middleton, Jr., was found unconscious from gas in his former home at 538 Cooper Street; the Camden Fire Department First Aid Squad, including Russell Anderson, worked to revive him.
Camden firemen and policemen gave Jack, the Airedale mascot of the Headquarters Fire Company at Fifth and Arch Streets, a hero's funeral in November 1934 after he was crushed under the wheels of his own truck. An estimated 3500 people passed his bier, and taps were sounded over his grave at sunset; Arthur Batten was among the honorary bearers.
Ralph Burrough, 18, drowned in the Delaware River while swimming to a yacht; his body was recovered by J.R. McDonald of 528 Byron Street and Christopher Moll of 610 York Street.
