Martin B. Carrigan, born in Pennsylvania in July 1872, was appointed to the Camden Fire Department in 1904, rose to Captain, and died in the line of duty on January 19, 1922 of injuries sustained fighting the Kaighn Avenue fire.
Barton Lane was born in Camden in November 1840 to James S. and Mary Lane. His father was a bookbinder. The Lane family moved to Camden shortly after the birth of Barton's older brother, James M. Lane, and they were in town for the 1840 Census.
James H. Carey was born in Pennsylvania in October of 1838 to parents James and Catherine Carey. During the 1850 Census, the Carey family resided in Lower Dublin Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, the Careys relocated to Camden.
Berkley Street runs through South Camden from Buren Avenue to Haddon Avenue, named for Lord Berkeley, one of the original proprietors of colonial New Jersey. The section east of Broadway was once known as Hamilton Street until 1882.
