Bruno S. Ulak of Camden, NJ served as a First Lieutenant in the 698th Ordnance Company, Aviation. He survived the Bataan Death March and over two years as a Japanese prisoner of war before being killed on September 7, 1944, when the hell ship Shinyo Maru was torpedoed and sunk.
Camden Courier-Post, September 8, 1943 — Lieut. Brunislaus S. Ulak, a South Camden Army officer held prisoner by the Japanese in the Philippines, sent his parents his first word in 17 months on two prison-camp postcards, urging his father to keep working hard at his shipyard job.
Camden Courier-Post, December 1942 — The War Department listed Lieutenant Brunislaus S. Ulak of 914 Atlantic Avenue as a Japanese prisoner in the Philippines, and the Navy reported Irwin R. Clark of 826 State Street killed in action.
