Louis R. Mote

Louis Rodger Mote (1884–1939) owned a home at 1111 North 23rd Street in Cramer Hill and worked at one of Camden's shipyards before serving as Assistant Superintendent of Streets for the City of Camden under Mayor Winfield S. Price. He and his wife Louise were active in 11th Ward Republican politics.

Harry Jackson Mote Jr.

Harry Jackson Mote Jr. of Camden, NJ, served as Second Engineer aboard the Liberty Ship SS Meriwether Lewis. He was lost on March 2, 1943 when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by German Submarine U-634 in the North Atlantic, with all hands.

23rd Street originates in the former Pavonia section — now Cramer Hill — and extends south to Federal Street in East Camden, noted in the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory. The James G. Blaine School stood at the southeast corner of 23rd Street and Wayne Avenue.

Attacked by Fish Hawk

John Daltman and George Wells were attacked by a fish hawk while gunning along the North Cramer Hill shore in East Camden, and shot the bird after a desperate battle. Freeholder Funfer, William Pepeta Jr., Samuel Arnold and Louis Mote had similar experiences with hawks along Petty's Island within a few days.
