From George Reeser Prowell's History of Camden County, New Jersey , 1886 Newton Friend's Meeting About the year 1800, when the general opening of roads made it no longer important to be on the water, Newton Friends determined to move from their old meeting-house on Newton Creek to a place more central; and in Fourth Month, 1801, Joseph Kaighn gave them the lot of land-at the corner of the Mount Ephraim road and Mount Vernon Street , in the present city of Camden, on which, in the same year, they built the brick meetinghouse that now stands there.

George Nowrey
GEORGE NOWREY was born in Glendon PA, a few miles from Easton, in 1862. His family moved to Camden when he was 11. His brother was Joseph E. Nowrey , Democratic politician from Camden who served as the city's Mayor from 1902 to 1905.

Inception of the First Paid Fire Department in the US
During the Civil War, Camden purchased its first steam fire apparatus on June 4, 1864 the Independence Fire Company No. 3 purchased an Amoskeag steamer for $3250. This apparatus was a third class, single pump style with serial #92.

St. John's Parish was incorporated on January 7, 1852, having been in its inception a mission of St. Paul's Parish . In 1853 a lot was secured at the northwest corner of Broadway and Royden Street .
