The Red Carpet

1037-1039 Broadway

From the 1980s into the late 1990s, 1037-1039 Broadway was home to the Red Carpet, a bar owned and operated by Elaine Gardiner Brundage. Elaine ran the bar until about a year before her death at 61 on December 25, 2000. During the 1990s, she was assisted by her companion Randy. In the bar's final years, Elaine's daughter Robin, sons Bobby and Marvin, and stepson James also worked there.

One of the most notable sights in Camden in the late 1990s was Elaine checking IDs at the Red Carpet's door on weekends, ensuring young patrons were of legal age.

After the Red Carpet closed, the building remained unoccupied. On January 28, 2012, a fire caused significant damage to the Red Carpet and the adjacent vacant building at 1033-1035 Broadway. The fire, likely started by trespassers in the Red Carpet's basement, completely gutted the interior and caused the roof to collapse.
