Armed Robber Changes Mind
John Hamlett, of 800 Van Hook Street, reported to police Monday night a friendly robber attempted an armed holdup in the intended victim car parked at 6th and Sycamore Streets.
Patrolman Edward Yeager said Hamlett reported the robbery try after holding a conversation with the holdup man before he fled. Hamlett said he entered his automobile about 10:30 p.m. and saw a man sitting inside. He had a revolver in his hand, and a handkerchief covered part of his face, Hamlett said.
As Hamlett attempted to get out of the car again, the man pulled him back inside. Hamlett said he struggled to get the gun from the would-be robber when suddenly the man pulled the handkerchief from his face and laughed.
After talking with the man, described as about 33 years old, 5 feet 8 inches and 185 pounds, Hamlett went to a telephone and called police.
