BREAD THIEF SHOT. A Policeman's Bullet Forced a Fugitive to Surrender. Walter Brown, living at 247 Division street, was caught stealing bread from the doorsteps of residences on his street early this morning by Policeman Schregler. The thief ran, and after he had jumped over a fence into a yard in the rear Schregler fired three shots over the fence, compelling the fugitive to surrender. Brown was taken to the station house and locked up. He claimed he was hungry and had stolen the bread because he had nothing to eat. Baker William G. Kairer, who was murdered last winter, was referred to in the testimony.
