Camden's Veteran Chief, Samuel Buzine, Has Come Out Alive From Many Tight Places
After having served nearly two score years in Camden's paid fire department, Assistant Chief Samuel Buzine will retire on a pension on July 1, according to a resolution passed by City Council.
Chief Buzine went to the fire service about the time the volunteers gave way to regularly paid men. He has seen longer consecutive service than any of the men in the department. He is known to his subordinates as "Daddy." During his incumbency he has been in many a tight place and has never told his men to go where he did not accompany them. He was with Fireman George Shields, William Hillman and William Jobes when the three were killed at the Old Armory fire in March, 1906. He was also in the thick of the fight against the flames which burned the old market house on Federal street, destroying many business places and dwellings and threatening the entire city.
