Savannah is Ready

Atlanta Constitution – April 15, 1906

Savannah, Ga. April 14—(Special.)—Jacksonville will meet Savannah on the local diamond on Monday in the opening game of the season in the south Atlantic League, and it is expected that the crowd in attendance will be fully as large as the tremendous gatherings that have heretofore thronged the grounds on opening days. Added grand stand and bleacher accommodations will meet all demands, however, and none who attend will suffer discomfort or inconvenience through lack of seating facilities.

Hoff and Curran will appear as the battery for Savannah in the opening game, while Loose and Robinson will appear for Jacksonville. Matthews will umpire. Mace being in Charleston and Keefe in Macon for the opening games in those cities.

The others whom Savannah will present on the opening day are: Sorrell, first; Logan, second; Sylvester, third; Hallman, short; Dexter, left; Howard center, and King or Tydeman, right. The management has canned a few of the try-outs lately. Smeltz, who goes to the Albany “Cracker League” team, being one. Lunt and Weeks failed to make good as pitchers, and have sought other fields of effort. Lipp, Heisman, Hoff, Gearhardt and Washer constitute the pitching staff, but it is probable that one or two of these boys will soon bid the aggregation a sad farewell.

On the whole, the team looks well to the fans, who have been out having a peep at the boys in practice games between the Regulars and the Yanigans. Great things are expected of them, and fond hopes will be frustrated if the rag is not wrested from Macon this season.
