August J. Hiller

August Joseph Hiller Sr. was a prominent figure in Camden, New Jersey's German-American community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was actively involved in organizations such as the Camden Liedertafel, the Turn Verein, and Ss. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church.

Born in Philadelphia in 1858, Hiller moved to Camden in the 1870s. He married Theresa Lotzpeich in the late 1870s or early 1880. By 1880, he had established a bakery at 427 Kaighn Avenue, which also served as his residence. He operated the business with two employees, who lived on-site, along with a domestic helper. That same year, on November 30, his son, August J. Hiller Jr., was born.

Hiller ran his bakery at the Kaighn Avenue location until his death in 1910. In 1895, he was involved in a serious accident when his wagon was struck by a train at South 7th and Spruce Streets. Fortunately, he survived the incident and was able to continue with his daily life.

August Hiller died on November 16, 1910. His widow, Theresa, moved from the Kaighn Avenue residence the following year. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, where she was also laid to rest upon her death in 1933.
