Bowman Matlack was a well-known figure in South Camden. According to the 1880 Census, he lived with his wife Priscilla and their three daughters at 635 South 5th Street. The Matlacks had six children in total, but by 1910, only three were still living. In 1880, Bowman Matlack worked as a fish dealer. He also served as a policeman under Mayor Claudius Bradshaw and Chief of Police Josiah Matlack.
Later in life, Matlack worked various jobs as a laborer and eventually found employment at an oilcloth plant in Camden. By 1890, the Matlack family had moved to 1730 South 6th Street, and by 1900, they relocated to 1039 South 5th Street, where they remained.
Bowman Matlack lived at 1039 South 5th Street until his death in May 1914 at the age of 74.
