Tennessee Road is a short, one-block thoroughfare running from Collings Road south to Merrimac Road, situated between New Jersey Road and Kearsarge Road. It lies across the street and southwest of Yorkship School. Notably, there are no houses or businesses directly facing Tennessee Road.
Throughout the years, the road has likely experienced more foot traffic than vehicle traffic, as it serves as a convenient shortcut to recreational areas such as Malandra Hall, as well as the nearby baseball diamonds, tennis courts, basketball court, and street hockey rink located east of Kearsarge Road, below South Merrimac Road.
Tennessee Road is named after the USS Tennessee (BB-43), a battleship whose keel was laid on May 14, 1917, at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard. The ship was launched on April 30, 1919, sponsored by Helen Lenore Roberts, daughter of Tennessee Governor Albert H. Roberts, and was commissioned on June 3, 1920, under the command of Captain Richard H. Leigh. The Tennessee was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor but was repaired and went on to play a significant role in the South Pacific during World War II.
