George E. Schultz Jr.
George E. Schultz Jr. was born on September 28, 1942 to George E. and Violet Schultz. His early years were spent at 3010 Cramer Street in East Camden, where the family lived in the late 1940s. At that time George Schultz Sr. was working as an upholsterer.
The family later moved to the Cramer Hill section of Camden, occupying a home at 1125 North 19th Street. George Schultz Jr. attended Veterans Memorial Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a member of the Class of 1961. After serving in America's armed forces, he returned to Camden, joining the Camden Police Department on November 25, 1968.
On July 5, 1969, while responding to a domestic disturbance call on South 3rd Street below Sycamore Street, Officer Schultz observed his Academy classmate Officer Charles Sutman gunned down by a shotgun blast from a second floor window. As he attempted to assist his brother officer, Officer Schultz was killed by the same assailant as he exited his cruiser. Officer Schultz's career was ended tragically only 7 months after it began, and he left his wife and one daughter. His parents remained residents of Cramer Hill as late as 1970.
The murderer of Officers Sutman and Schultz was sentenced to life imprisonment. Although he made frequent requests for parole, thanks to the efforts of Camden's law enforcement community they were all rejected.
