Private First Class Chester J. Gdowik of 947 Jackson Street, Camden, served with the 6th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Division. A South Camden native who worked in the machine shop at New York Shipbuilding before his induction, he was killed in action in Italy on May 25, 1944.

Camden Courier-Post, September 8, 1943 — Lieut. Brunislaus S. Ulak, a South Camden Army officer held prisoner by the Japanese in the Philippines, sent his parents his first word in 17 months on two prison-camp postcards, urging his father to keep working hard at his shipyard job.
Judge Frank Katzenbach ordered two New York Shipyard employees, Edwin F. Duffy and Emerson Townsend, to pay their wives $7 a week. Duffy's wife, Elizabeth, lived at 692 Woodland Avenue; Townsend's wife, Lena, at 2870 Kansas Road.
Patrolman John McTaggart, 53, died in Cooper Hospital after 31 years in the Department of Public Safety, 12 as a fireman and 19 as a policeman walking the same Broadway beat from Kaighn Avenue to Line Street. He was the guest of honor at the annual St. Patrick's night party "A Nite in Ireland."
