Camden Fire Destroys Home

Camden Courier-Post - January 8, 2004

Two other houses were damaged in the three-alarm blaze

By Tom Lounsberry, Courier-Post Staff

A three-alarm fire Wednesday destroyed one home and damaged two others. No injuries were reported in the blaze, which broke out about 2:30 p.m. in the first block of Dudley Street. The city fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause.

The fire started in a vacant three-story home at 88 Dudley St., Deputy Fire Chief Tom Quinn said. The structure was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, and it quickly collapsed, Quinn said. Flames spread to 90 Dudley St., causing significant damage there, Quinn said.

A recently renovated house at 84 Dudley St. also sustained smoke and heat damage, including melted siding, Quinn said. Firefighters, who took turns fighting the blaze because of the cold weather, was declared under control about 4 p.m., Quinn said.

Richard Gross, who was watching his mother’s home at 90 Dudley St. while she has been in a nursing home, said squatters had used the vacant home at 88 Dudley St. for about three months.

Authorities do not know if they or anyone else was near the structure when the blaze began.
