Camden Strikers Held for Disorder
City Commissioner Declares That Settlement Will Be Reached
CAMDEN, July 21 (AP).—Judge Frank T. Neutze [sic] today turned over to the Grand Jury 26 cases involving riot charges growing out of RCA strike disorders last week. He demanded an aggregate of $135,000 bail for the release of the men.
The court dismissed 39 other defendants, most of whom had been held in default of bail since the outbreaks last Thursday and Friday. He turned over five other cases to Police Judge Lewis Liberman, who fined four of the defendants and suspended sentence on the fifth. Fines exacted totaled $55.
More than 20 other strike disorder cases remained to be heard later today.
Judge Neutze said he sat as a committing magistrate at the direction of Supreme Court Justice Frank T. Lloyd, who last week personally presided in a similar capacity at preliminary hearings.
There were frequent oral clashes between attorneys for the strikers and sympathizers and assistant prosecutors. Several hundred spectators were denied admittance after the room became filled. Policemen carrying sticks patrolled the halls.
Ernest Christy, 27, of Philadelphia, who, Police Sergeant Edward Carroll testified, was arrested after he shouted, "Go get the cops, kill them," was held in $10,000 bail.
