Fragments of Cannon Crashed Into Bedroom Camden Police Cleared Up a Mysterious New Year's Eve Explosion Which Gave Rude Awakening Since New Year's Eve Police Captain Stanley, of Camden, has been investigating a mysterious explosion in the rear of the home of G. C. Burkett, Newton avenue, below Mt. Vernon street. Yesterday he cleared up the mystery. During the advent of the new year, while the Burketts were in bed, they were startled by a terrific explosion. The next instant something came crashing through the closed shutters, smashing the window and passing over their heads into the ceiling. The shutters were reduced to splinters, as well as the window. Captain Stanley found imbedded in the ceiling a chunk of iron weighing several pounds. Other pieces were found which, fitted together, showed they had once formed a small cannon. Further investigation proved a hotelkeeper had fired off a cannon in celebration of 1904 during which it exploded. A few inches lower and the flying pieces of iron would have struck the Burketts. On the hotelkeeper promising to repair the damage Burkett refused to prosecute him.
