Howard Bean Dies At 56; Retired as Policeman June 2 Howard Bean, 56, Camden policeman, who retired on pension June 2, died today in Philadelphia Naval hospital. Last rites were administered to Mr. Bean Wednesday night by the Rev. William W. Ridgeway, rector of St. Wilfred's Episcopal Church. Mr. Bean, who was born in Philadelphia, lived in Camden 50 years and resided at 1103 North Twenty-sixth street. He was a sergeant in the 312th Engineers in War I and served one year in France. Active in veteran's affairs, Mr. Bean was commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of New Jersey, in 1940-41. He also was a past commander of Cpl. Mathews-Purnell post 518, VFW, member of the Cooties, the fun-making organization of the VFW; member of Public Service post 231, American Legion, the Police and Fire Association and the Patrolman's Benevolent Association. Mr. Bean began his duty with the Camden police department Aug. 15, 1925, and for many years he was house sergeant at the old Third district police station in East Camden. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Carrie R. Bean, past president of the VFW Auxiliary, Department of New Jersey, and a stepson, Master Sgt. Hubert Hoellering, in the army. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
