LIFE HEREABOUTS

This may have all the earmarks of a Memory Lane story... and maybe it is... but the main theme is something that is going to happen tonight... right here in Our Town... at Kenney's Restaurant... it started 25 years ago... the night into the night, too... but we're ahead of our story.
On the night of April 11, 1924... a bunch of Camden young men was very happy... and yours truly the happiest of them all... a basketball team playing under the combined colors of the Broadway Gym and Courier club won that night the semi-pro basketball championship of South Jersey... they are together tonight in a reunion sponsored by the old Camden Courier... and the cup to the champion stood as high as "Hop" Stoddard.
WHEN THE TOURNEY teams were announced under a by-line story by Frank H. Price... the Broadway Cycle was not the favorite by design nor was the longest shot in the field either... Mister Rube Futterer... has written... of us in the category of being a "dark horse"... there were many great ball clubs in that tourney... and later we will tell you about each and every team... because all deserve credit and any one of them would have been worthy of the championship...
THE TOURNEY OPENED... the nearest thing to a favorite one can find in the old clippings was Barney Maguire's Immaculate Conception club... and numbered among its players were Barney Maguire, Joseph Sheehan (who later umpired in Cleveland), Bart Sheehan, Shamus Maguire... Eddie Lobley played second guard.
ONE who will not be there... but whose praise will be sung long, maybe a little too long... was "Udge" Quicksell... Udge has passed on... but his contributions to the game here in the early 20's will sure be on the sleeves of his old pals tonight.
THE OLD MALARKEY... the First Ward club... Ott Laxton... Eddie Brandt... Harriet Schwoeri... Frank Hambleton... Walnut Street... First Ward Republican Club... Kenney's... Red Haines... "Toots" Benedict... Charley Sheets.
THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION... that one-point margin in the final... the playing court at Market Street and State... YMHA Hall on Walnut Street... the playing hall at 531 Market Street, "the old Malarkey." Good back in the early 20's -- Oh, boy!
