LIGHT WEIGHT BOXING TOURNEY
Many Local Cracks Will Enter the Tuxedo Club's Competitions.
Local light-weights will have an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities if the well-thought-out plans of the Tuxedo Athletic Club do not miscarry. The light-weight tournament is now an assured fact, and the first meeting is down for July 9.
A preliminary meeting of the boxers who are to take part and the management was held at the club rooms, 1806 Market street, last night. The men on hand were John H. Clark, Owen Ziegler, "Bull" McCarthy, Martin Judge, Tommy Kelly, the "Hoboken Cyclone;" Bill Payne and the manager of Charlie McKeever.
By mutual agreement the weight limit was fixed at 135 pounds, and all the men expressed a willingness to get down to that limit.
Several other well-known local boxers are expected to enter the competitions at the meeting to-morrow night, when final arrangements will be made. Among these are Leslie Pearce, Perome Quigley, Al O'Brien, Dan McConnell and Charlie Wood.
There is some doubt that Charlie McKeever will enter the tournament, and Owen Ziegler was greatly disappointed when he heard this, as he desires to go up against the "plowboy" again and reverse the decision given against him (Ziegler) before the Tuxedo last winter.
All the men seemed greatly interested in the affair, and as it is the first of its kind ever held in Philadelphia it undoubtedly will make a big hit with the followers of the art of hit-and-get-away.
