Negro Murdered by White Woman

NEGRO MURDERED BY WHITE WOMAN. Elizabeth Green Plunges Knife Into John Gideon, Causing Wound Which Ended in His Death, Following Wordy Quarrel on Baxter Street in Which Slayer Says Her Victim Used Vile Terms. Another murder was added to the criminal history of Baxter street last night, when Elizabeth Green, aged 22 years, a homeless white woman, stabbed John Gideon, colored, aged 19 years, over the heart and in the left side. He died at Cooper Hospital fifteen minutes after being rushed there in the downtown patrol wagon. The stabbing took place at 10:30 o'clock in front of 731 Baxter street where Gideon lived with his mother. Captain Hyde was on duty at police headquarters when a telephone message was received that a man had been stabbed on Baxter street between 7th and Kaighn avenue. This was followed by the report that the man had been stabbed and was bleeding to death in that section. The downtown patrol was sent to the scene as quickly as possible and take all the officers in the district. In about fifteen minutes every policeman on duty in the Seventh ward was at the scene. When they arrived at the scene the patrol wagon was also at the scene. The man was rushed to Cooper Hospital. Elizabeth Green did the stabbing at 1030 o'clock in front of 731 Baxter street, where Gideon, who lived there, came along. The two had been talking and at first denied all knowledge of the crime, stating she had seen nothing. In the cell she said: "Captain Hyde, you know me and you know I would not use a knife. He called me names that a decent woman should not have to hear from a man." Captain Hyde was on duty at police headquarters when the call came in. He rushed to the Jay park and the man was lying on the table in your office, and after he died turned it over to Policeman Thompson. Green was arraigned in Police Court before Recorder Stackhouse on a charge of assault and battery against the victim before he died, but the charges were upgraded to murder after Gideon died at Cooper Hospital. The green woman was visibly under the influence of liquor when arraigned and on the way to prison was almost incoherent. Because of the condition it was decided not to question her until she was in a better state and address. Gideon is the son of William Gideon and had been with the Green woman for some time. He has been separated from his parents who lived at 737 Baxter street at the time. The father, William Gideon, a respectable colored man, deeply lamented the death of his son and could not explain how the boy had come to keep such company. Elizabeth Green was arraigned in Police Court on the charge of murder. She was represented by Police Headquarters Detective Hart, who stood guard at her cell. When the detective began to talk to her she appeared to be agitated with grief and when asked to tell her story she hysterically gasped: "I did not murder him; he attacked me." In the car, says the facts of the tragedy, Elizabeth Green is 22 years old and John Gideon is the son of William Gideon, the witness. The Green woman admitted having stabbed Gideon after he had called her vile names and attacked her. Christina Cooper, the witness in the murder, arrested by Policeman Thompson, stated that she did not actually see the stabbing but had seen the knife taken from.
