Pistol Shot Nearly Precipitated a Riot

PISTOL SHOT NEARLY PRECIPITATED A RIOT. Negroes Turned on White Man Who Discharged Weapon on Crowded South Camden Street. A race riot was narrowly averted at Broadway and Mt. Vernon street, Camden, last night while the streets were thronged, when Harry Gedling, a young man, discharged a pistol at several negroes as they were passing down the street. The negroes turned after the shot was fired, and Gedling fled. Policeman Fiore Troncone gave chase and caught Gedling after running several blocks. Several citizens went to Troncone's assistance and kept the crowd off while he took the prisoner to the nearest patrol box. Afterward he was locked up in the city jail. Gedling told Acting Chief Schregler that he shot at the negroes because he was afraid they intended to attack him. On account of the feeling in the southern section of the city between white and colored residents Acting Chief Schregler has instructed the policeman to prevent crowds assembling, and on the slightest breach of the peace to arrest all violators.
