Columbia students held a mass-meeting Tuesday at the university in New York and definitely decided to have a crew. They backed up their determination with money, subscribing more than $1,500.
William Brown, of the Nassau Wheelmen, New York, will try to ride 2,500 miles on a bicycle. He will start May 12 on Long Island roads. He will employ 35 pacing machines, including automobiles.
A match has been arranged between "Kid" Broad, of Cleveland, and Jack McClelland, of Pittsburg, before the Business Men's Gymnasium Club of Cleveland on May 1. The fight will be for 20 rounds.
"Gus" Ruhlin, Corbett's sparring partner, arrived at Lakewood, N. J., Monday. Ruhlin says Corbett is fit to fight now. Ruhlin has gone into training for his fight with Fitzsimmons at Westchester on June 1.
Joseph Walcott may now get on a fight with "Tommy" Ryan, who has concluded to draw the color line no longer. William A. Brady will now arrange a match for Ryan with Walcott to be held at Coney Island some time this summer.
At Niles, Ohio, Monday night, Matty Matthews, of New York, defeated William Payne, of Baltimore, in six rounds on points. Matthews also knocked out Dan McConnell, of Trenton, in the third round by a right-hand blow on the jaw.
