Carter's Place
Carter's Place, also known as Carter's Alley and Carter Alley, runs west from North 4th Street to what at one time had been Newkirk Place. Robert Jacobs and his family were living on Carter's Place as early as 1872, according to Camden's City Directories. Robert Jacobs was married to Abigail Carter, the daughter of Daniel Stiles Carter and Rebecca Archer, and it is highly likely that the alley received its name through connection to the Carter family.
Daniel S. Carter was one of the leading property-owners in Camden in its very early days and served as City Assessor in 1833, and was on the school committee in 1847, was a Justice of the Peace and was on the Board of Directors of the Camden Fire Insurance Association.
At least one home stood on Carter's Place in 1872, and two homes evident in the 1906 Sanborn Map were occupied from the 1880s into the 1910s. The 1885, 1891 and 1906 Sanborn Maps show four buildings and three sheds on Carter's Place.
At some point buildings were renumbered. 315 Carter's Place was occupied as a residence as late as 1926. 317 Carter's Place housed Michael Jubanyik's contracting business from 1915 to at least late 1918 and possibly later.
