S.S.E. Cowperthwaite, Sewing Machines, etc. 221 Federal Street ONE of the oldest business concerns in Camden is that of S.S. E. Cowperthwaite, located at No. 221 Federal St., and well known throughout the city and country.
STEPHEN PARSONS came to Camden in 1844. He operated a hotel at Federal Street and Front Street , near the Federal Street Ferry with partner Richard Cake which was known as Woolston's Hotel.
A Post Office was established in Camden in 1803 and called Cooper's Ferry Post Office, under which name it continued until 1829 when it was changed to Camden.
In the beginning Camden was just settlement of a few farms and a couple ferries to and from Philadelphia run by the Cooper Family. Before it was named Camden it was mostly just called Cooper Ferry.
On March 12, 1841 the Camden Mutual Fire Insurance Company was chartered.
