Five men who were arrested by police in a raid Wednesday on an alleged horse-race gambling establishment at 322 Kaighn avenue, were held in $1000 bail each for the grand jury when they pleaded not guilty and waived police court hearings yesterday.
The defendants gave their names as Morris Goldstein, 32, of the Kaighn avenue address; Samuel Goldstein, 59, of 419 Chestnut street; William Talarico, 45, of 202 Chestnut street; Frank Gour, 41, of 249 Kaighn avenue, and Herbert Gilbrith, 31, of Lindenwold.
Morris Goldstein was charged with being the proprietor of the alleged betting establishment and the others with being frequenters of a disorderly house. John L. Morrissey represented all but Gilbrith.
Carlton W. Rowand, attorney for Gilbrith, declared his client was an insurance agent and was in the establishment to collect premiums when the raid occurred.
