A FLYING MACHINE DEVISED IN CAMDEN

Operations of a Model Are Satisfactory and a Large Apparatus Is About to Be Constructed for a More Practical Test—The Inventor Is Encouraged by His Employers in This City.
Camden is the home of a budding genius, who may some day be as famous as the lamented Darius Green. For five years Charles W. Clark, who lives at 124 North Twenty-fourth street, in that part of New Jersey known as Cramer Hill, has been experimenting upon flying machines. He is about to make and apply to Tygert Fertilizing Company, at 42 South Front street, Camden, with whom at Mr. Clark's employers been ask that he will devise something practical from the construction he is building on vacation for the purpose of conducting more experiments, and to help with his efforts by donations of money to make the machine.
BUILDING A BIG MACHINE
A model flying machine he has devised will weigh about twenty pounds, will have a 90 inch span, and $25. His experiments are conducted in the machine room. The model is about a pound and a half, and when applied to the machine, it would be run by clock-work. His operation is so perfect that a model, if large, is capable of carrying a man is being constructed.
The flying machine consists of a flat parachute-like curved at the bottom like an umbrella handle, upon which the saddle rests. Upon the saddle is the pedal, which is similar to the gearing used upon the latest old Star bicycles, the motion of the pedal operates the machine upward. The machine has a length of about nine feet.
FOUR HUNDRED PER MINUTE
The small wheel is run by the operator, and opposite the small wheel connects with a larger one at the point of the mast. The gear at the top of the mast intersects the mast, the gearing being vertical. The action of this small pedals produces 400 or more revolutions per minute. Opposite the propeller is the steering apparatus, a flat rudder upon which the operator tips the machine up or down, and a vertical rudder to steer the machine right or left. The tail and rudder are operated by cords attached to the body of the operator. The machine is operated by the hand of the operator, with the feet. The experiments which have been conducted by Professor Langley, Smithsonian Institution, as the Professor gets his experiments very carefully, Mr. Clark has been able to build the lightest engineering structure of this century.
