CLEANING OUT A COLORED DIVE
The Proprietress, a Colored Woman, Held in Heavy Bail
Euceria Manor, a colored woman who runs a dive at Locust and Division streets, Camden, was committed in default of $1000 bail by Recorder Nowrey yesterday on a charge of harboring minors in her house for immoral purposes. The police raided her place early Sunday morning and arrested the proprietress and a white girl named Mabel Schooley, who appears to be about 12 years of age, but claims to be 16 years old.
They were arraigned side by side in the Camden police court yesterday. Captain Stanley, who conducted the raid, had a number of witnesses on hand to prove the bad reputation of the place. Among these witnesses were three colored boys and a white boy, their ages ranging from 14 to 16 years. Other witnesses testified to revelries that were participated in by white and colored persons of both sexes.
Mrs. Mary E. Beckett, who resides nearby, swore that the defendant had enticed her 16-year-old daughter to the house and kept her there for six days. When the witness went to the house to get her daughter she was refused admission.
Recorder Nowrey sentenced the Schooley girl to thirty days' imprisonment, and in the meantime efforts will be made to have her sent to the State Industrial School for Girls.
Euceria Manor has a bad record. She has served two years in State Prison for stabbing her sister, and last April was sentenced to ninety days for disorderly conduct.
