Veteran Police Officer Dies of Heart Attack While on Duty
Lt. Edward C. Hahn, veteran member of the Camden police department, died suddenly Saturday of a heart attack.
Shortly after reporting for duty for the 4 p.m. to midnight shift, Lieutenant Hahn, attached to the Third police district at Twenty-seventh and Federal streets, complained of suffering from indigestion.
He told his driver, Joseph Fearen, he was going to get some medicine as he left the station house. He walked to the Merit Drug Co., Twenty-sixth and Federal streets, and was about to enter when he collapsed on the sidewalk.
Passersby and the druggist, Joseph Mintz, carried him inside the store and summoned police. The First District police ambulance removed him to Cooper hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Lieutenant Hahn was appointed to the police department in 1922, and advanced to a sergeant in 1928 and promoted to lieutenant in March, 1943. He was 51, and lived at 3080 Mickle street.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Minerva E. Hahn; two sons, Edward J., of Pennsauken, and Lieut. (J. G.) William I. Irwin, of the USN; one daughter, Mrs. Florence Jarvis, of Camden; a brother, Daniel F. Hahn, of Haddonfield, and a sister, Mrs. Clara A. Niessner, of Runnemede.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in funeral parlors at Twenty-seventh and Carman streets.
