The photographic memory of a Camden patrolman resulted in the arrest of a man, sought since 1947 on a robbery indictment, it was disclosed Monday in municipal court.
Credited with the arrest of Robert Bailey, 49, of 236 Kaighn avenue, is Patrolman Joseph Carpenter, who, detectives said, recognized Bailey Thursday night.
Patrolman Carpenter, on duty with Patrolman Charles Richards, saw Bailey at Second and Sycamore streets, and asked him for identification.
When Bailey produced cards bearing the name of Charles Cornish, the two officers took him to city hall. As they entered the police station, Bailey bolted and ran north on Roosevelt plaza. Patrolman Richards brought him down with a flying tackle.
At his arraignment today before Municipal Judge Dzick on charges of assault and battery and resisting arrest, Detective Sgt. William Kelly testified Bailey was indicted by the 1947 May grand jury for robbing Clarence Watson, 69, of 2903 High street.
Watson, who operates an auto repair shop was struck with a pipe and robbed of $400 on Jan. 10 of 1947, Kelly testified.
Dzick held Bailey without bail for the grand jury.
