Louis Street runs between Haddon Avenue and Mount Ephraim Avenue, from Mount Vernon Street south to Sheridan Street. Primarily residential with many corner businesses, it passes Whitman Park and was devastated by the crack epidemic of the 1980s.
Arthur Cuellen Batten (1904–1972), known to his fellow firefighters as Artie, joined the Camden Fire Department on March 4, 1927 and served until his retirement on February 28, 1969, rising to captain of Rescue Company 1 and acting battalion chief. He lived for many years at 1132 North 22nd Street in Cramer Hill and invented the un-patented ring cutter used by the rescue company to remove finger jewelry.
Carman Street ran from Broadway to South 8th Street downtown and, across the Cooper River, from 15th Street through East Camden to Woodrow Wilson High School at 31st Street. It is apparently named for William Carman, whose home at Broadway and Federal Street stood until 1902.
22nd Street spans the former Pavonia section — now Cramer Hill — and extends south to Federal Street in East Camden, already laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published.
Walter James Aloysius Stanton Jr. was born on September 27, 1893, to Walter Stanton and his wife, Elizabeth Kelly. Walter Sr., a prominent baseball player in Camden, lived with his family at 318 Berkley Street in 1900, where he worked as a butcher.
