East Camden Family Flees from Fire in Night Clothes

EAST CAMDEN FAMILY FLEES FROM FIRE IN NIGHT CLOTHES Sparks From Chimney Cause Much Smoke But Little Damage at Home of Richard Cox Day's Happenings 'Cross the Creek The family of Richard Cox, 113 North Twenty-first street, were awakened shortly after five o'clock yesterday morning by the smell of smoke, and investigation showed the rooms filled with smoke. (Note: Correct address was 117 North 21st Street.) All the members of the family were hastily roused and without taking time to don their street clothes rushed from the house. One of the male members of the house rushed to Federal street and asked a motorman of a trolley car to notify the firemen, not knowing that there was a fire alarm box nearby. In the meantime, someone also phoned into the East Camden Fire House, at Twenty-seventh and Federal streets, and the firemen were soon on the scene. The firemen on their arrival found that the roof was aflame and had to use a ladder to reach the flames. They soon had the fire under control, and it is not thought the damage will exceed $50. It is thought sparks from the chimney on the house occupied by Thomas Newton, at 115 North Twenty-first street, caused the roof of No. 113 to catch fire, as sparks were seen flying in all directions from the chimney.
