MAN HELD ON CHARGE OF BEATING JITNEUR
Camden Police Say Alfred Kahn Admits He Was One of Two Suspected "Fares"
Identified by Imlay Binker, twenty-nine years old, of 722 State street, Camden, as one of his assailants in the murderous attack made Friday night in a taxicab near Lawnside, N. J., Alfred Kahn, twenty-one years old, of 1935 North Seventh street, Philadelphia, was committed to jail without bail by Justice Huyett yesterday. Detective Doran made the formal charge of atrocious assault and battery with intent to rob. Binker is in the Cooper Hospital in a serious state as a result of his experience with Kahn and an Italian, whom the police are seeking.
Kahn denied knowing anything about the case until detectives noticed blood stains on his cuffs and a further investigation showed more on his coat. The police say he then admitted being one of the two "fares" Binker had taken from a Federal street hotel supposedly to visit a sick person at Clementon. He asserted he had not participated in the actual attack.
Binker said he had shown a large amount of money among fellow jitneurs at the Federal Street Ferry, Thursday night. Kahn, who was employed in a nearby restaurant as a dishwasher, saw the money and later told Binker he would probably have him to take he and a friend on a trip later. On Friday night a call came for the taxicab and when Binker responded he found Kahn and an Italian employed in the same restaurant. It was while going down the White Horse pike that the attack was made, Binker evidently being struck by a blackjack until rendered unconscious. A couple of negro lads found and took him to the Camden hospital.
Binker is a son of Freeholder Thomas Binker. Kahn has a young wife and infant and is said to be under $1000 bail in Philadelphia for stealing an automobile.
