Daniel A. Gottlieb was born in Russia on August 18, 1882, and immigrated to America in 1890. After marrying Fannie, the couple lived for a time in Pennsylvania, where they welcomed daughter Essie in 1907 and son James in 1909. By 1912, the Gottlieb family had moved to New Jersey, and in October 1916, Daniel opened his butcher shop. Six more children were born: Anna, Leon, Jean, Gerald, Leah, and Jeanette. By 1918, the family had returned to Philadelphia, where they were still living in January 1920, but soon after they settled permanently in Camden, New Jersey.
By 1930, the Gottlieb family and their butcher shop were located on the 400 block of Chestnut Street in South Camden, a diverse neighborhood home to Jewish, Italian, Black, and other communities. The shop was located at 413 Chestnut Street, while the family lived next door at 411. James, Daniel's eldest son, had joined the business, working as the delivery truck driver. In February 1928, James had a close call when a train struck his truck.
By 1936, the business had expanded, and D. A. Gottlieb's shop relocated to a larger building at 404-416 Mount Vernon Street. Daniel eventually brought his other sons, Leon and Gerald, into the business.
Like many Jewish families in the late 1930s and 1940s, the Gottliebs moved to East Camden. The 1947 Camden City Directory lists Daniel at 2521 Baird Boulevard, with Gerald at 625 Randolph Street and Leon at 480 Randolph Street. James had moved to Mt. Holly, and by the fall of 1956, Leon and his family had moved to 620 Marlton Avenue. The 1970 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory still shows the Gottliebs in East Camden. Daniel Gottlieb passed away in February 1971.
The Gottliebs' butcher shop remained at 416 Mount Vernon Street through at least 1977, with Leon residing at 620 Marlton Pike and Gerald at 4001 Myrtle Avenue. Eventually, Gerald and Leon moved to Cherry Hill. Leon passed away on March 23, 1992, and Gerald on October 21, 1998.
