Edward Schlorer

Edward Schlorer was born in Baden, Germany, in 1860. He came to Camden in 1889 to join his younger brother, Adam Schlorer, who had established a meat business at Second and Arch Streets. That business had moved to 800–804 Chestnut Street in 1888 and remained there into the 1950s.

Edward married Amelia Zimmerman, a member of a well-known Camden family. Mrs. Schlorer gained a local reputation as an excellent cook and, in the very late 1890s, began making her own mayonnaise, which was sold at the Eighth and Chestnut Street store. After a trip to Europe in 1907, Edward and Amelia decided to package and sell mayonnaise and other condiments. They relocated to Philadelphia, where Mrs. Schlorer's mayonnaise quickly became popular with consumers. Her products are still sold today, almost 100 years later.

Edward Schlorer died at his Overbrook home on February 5, 1928. His brother Adam had died just eleven days earlier, on January 25, 1928, at his home in Wildwood, New Jersey.
