The Lester store was a key part of Camden's retail landscape from the 1920s through the 1960s, offering men's, women's, and children's clothing as well as jewelry. For much of its history, the store was located at 713 Broadway, between Line and Pine Streets. Lee Newman, who later founded his own successful men's store in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, worked as a manager under the store's owner, Sidney Lester, during the 1930s and 1940s. The business endured a major setback when a fire struck in 1942, but it managed to survive.

Sidney Lester first opened the store at 936 Broadway in 1928. In 1935, he relocated the business to 713 Broadway, where it operated for many years. The store remained open at that address at least through October of 1959, continuing to serve Camden's community.
