Hallowell Lane, a street in Camden, stretches south from Sheridan Street to Ferry Avenue. Despite being the site of several notable landmarks, no buildings or businesses on this lane have ever used a Hallowell Lane address. Prominent sites on this street include the old Camden Municipal Hospital for Infectious Disease, New Camden Cemetery, and the inappropriately named Whitman Park, previously home to the Morgan Village Little League baseball league. This name was misleading as there was already an established Whitman Park in its namesake neighborhood. Additionally, two Garden Apartment complexes are located on Hallowell Lane: Beacon Place Apartments at the northern end and Tamarack Apartments (originally Ferry Station Apartments) at the southern end. While there are residences opening onto Hallowell Lane, addresses for these apartments use building letters and numbers, resulting in no street addresses for Hallowell Lane itself.

The lane is named after a brickyard operated by Charles H. Hallowell, a Philadelphia brick manufacturer. This brickyard, functioning from the 1880s and still in business as late as 1900, was located on Mount Ephraim Avenue opposite Evergreen Cemetery but had ceased operations by 1906. Hallowell Lane, running north from Ferry Avenue along the eastern edge of New Camden Cemetery, was named in recognition of this business. Interestingly, city directories from the 1880s and 1890s suggest that the cemetery was once part of the Hallowell brickyard.

Charles H. Hallowell’s family played significant roles in Camden’s community. His son, Harry L. Hallowell, managed the business and was politically active in Camden’s old Eighth Ward. Another son, John Hallowell, had a lengthy career with the Camden Police Department, and Harry Lynch Hallowell, another son, served in the Camden Fire Department at Engine Company 10 until his sudden death from a heart attack on December 20, 1924.
