2 YOUTHS ARE CAUGHT IN PADLOCKED CAFE Two Whitman Park youths who were arrested by a special officer as they were emerging from the cellar of a padlocked saloon were held without bail Saturday to await grand jury disposal of charges of breaking and entering. The prisoners gave their names as Thomas Hines, 21, of 1264 Decatur street, and Leon Gentek, 18, of 1219 Van Hook street. They were arrested by former Policeman Oscar Probst, now a special watchman guarding stores on Mt. Ephraim avenue. Probst said he saw them coming from the basement of Purdy's Cafe, southeast corner of Van Hook street and Mt. Ephraim avenue. They had forced their way in, Probst stated. The two pleaded not guilty.

WHITMAN PARK SHOP 21ST SNIPER TARGET Window Shattered But No Missile is Found; 2 Sleuths on Case While county and city detectives, police of a half-dozen communities and scores of volunteer sleuths sought vainly for some clue to his identity, South Jersey's "phantom sniper" today fired his twenty-first shot. Arriving at his place of business, 1201 Mt. Ephraim avenue, this morning, Benjamin Donde found that the plate glass in the door of the shop had been drilled by a small hole, apparently made by a bullet. As in most of the cases attributed to the "sniper," no missile was found despite a careful search inside the store. The twentieth incident of the sort, occurring yesterday when the windshield of an automobile in which Abe Fuhrman, Camden jeweler, and his two sons were riding, had served virtually to eliminate theories that the 'sniper's" weapon might be a sling-shot or a revolver equipped with a silencer. The missile which drilled a hole in the Fuhrman auto's windshield was a small, nickel-plated screw. This, of course, could not have been fired from an ordinary rifle or pistol. Police agree, moreover, that no sling shot could be made sufficiently powerful to have driven the screw through the heavy plate glass of the windshield. As it struck, the missile whistled past the ears of the occupants, only a few inches over the heads, and imbedded itself in the upholstery at the rear of the car. County Detectives Howard Smith and William Cleary, it was announced today, had been assigned to special duty in the manhunt for the sniper. They were assigned by Prosecutor Ethan P. Wescott. Both agree that the weapon used by the sniper is a compressed air gun.

Ephraim Avenue Camden, N.J. 08100 My dear Bubnoski, Some days ago I notified my editor that the next article I planned to write for this column would concern itself with Bruno's Restaurant in Camden, of which you are the proprietor. The editor telephoned you to make arrangements for a photographer, at which time you reportedly told him you weren't interested in a public assessment of your food unless the critic was willing to spend 45 years or so to make a fair sampling. Your suggestion intrigued me and I informed my editor that I, for one, was willing to spend the next 16,425 dinners at your place. Unfortunately, standards of good taste prevent me reporting his exact words, but it was something to the effect that it might be difficult to explain to the business manager why all my expenses over such a long period of time were being incurred at one restaurant. He seemed very much convinced on this point, and I could find no way to dissuade him. Still, there was the matter of public responsibility. The value of this column, if it has one, is to provide a few fragile guideposts to the unwary diner, who otherwise would stand to forfeit a good piece of his wallet for a meal he knows nothing about until he's et it. Although I have occasionally been accused of stretching a point, I try for an honest appraisal, without fawning to advertisers or zealous restaurateurs. Perhaps that is too noble a principle for survival. It is certainly not the safer course, but at the heart of it, it is honest, which I am old-fashioned and foolish enough to believe is worth pursuing. All of us know that it is something of a landmark, dating back to a time when it was known as "the Farmer's Hotel," a way station for travelers headed for the Camden Ferry. Your parents, Bruno and Anna Bubnoski, bought the place from the Betz Brewery, and the first dollar bill they took in, dated January 19, 1925, still hangs above the bar. Over the years, they built the restaurant up into a business with a reputation for being one of the best eating spots in Camden, and many people visiting West Jersey Hospital across the street would make it a point to stop at Bruno's to have supper, or just to pass the time while a friend was dying across the street, or a baby was being born. Many people who haven't been to Bruno's for years still remember it with great fondness, and motoring there one evening last week, I couldn't help but think how the neighborhood must have changed. Mt. Ephraim Avenue is brightly lit, but the sidewalks are vacant and the back streets are dark and uninviting. Still, Bruno's has a clean, if not cheery, look about it. Inside there is a long, polished bar and a large dining room with plain tables and stiff chairs and some paintings of antique cars and the stuffed heads of deer and caribou mounted on the walls. My editor couldn't spare me for 45 years, but I did go ahead and have three meals there. Most of all, I was impressed by the prices. Almost everything is in the $2 to $4 range, while the most expensive meals on the menu are broiled lobster tails and the sirloin steak, both marked at $5.95. My first trip, I had a seafood combination ($4.50), which consisted of one small lobster tail, a tender, though small, piece of flounder and a perfectly delicious crab cake. The next visit I tried the sirloin steak ($5.95), which was one-inch thick and of good size, fairly tender and well-cooked. Finally came a pot roast ($2.75), which was two large but thin slices of tender meat covered with a nice stick-to-the-ribs beef gravy. Several excursions into the appetizers produced a bland egg roll with shrimp (65 cents) and a very satisfying shrimp cocktail ($1.95) containing five large and firm shrimp, accompanied by tangy sauce. A cup of beef noodle soup du jour (40 cents) was thick with beef chunks and filled to the surface with chewables, while a cup of snapper (also 40 cents) was a very rich broth accompanied by a small cream jar of sherry. In the line of vegetables, the pickled beets and mixed vegetables were ordinary, while a cheese potato puff proved to be a pleasant diversion, though not very cheesy, and the best of the lot was the stuffed potato, a kind of spiced mashed potato baked in a tinfoil boat. The desserts were nothing to rave about. A bowl of rice pudding was too thick to be creamy, and a slice of apple pie had a doughy crust and more goo than apples. Hoping for the best, I persisted in ordering a cup of coffee at the end of each meal, but each cup proved worse than the last, and the very last was bilge. Still, there's a lot to make up for, and when you average it all out over 45 years, I have no doubt that Bruno's will come out being one of the finest spots in Camden. Sincerely, A. G.

DRIVER CAUGHT IN CHASE An alleged hit-run driver was captured after a chase by a city fireman in the middle of the Camden bridge. Wallace Duvall, 31, of 1469 Mt. Ephraim avenue, was crossing Seventh and Penn streets when he was struck by an automobile. According to Duvall and George Garner, a fireman attached to the Twenty-seventh and Federal streets fire house, the driver failed to stop. Garner followed in his car. He chased the driver half way across the bridge and arrested him. He gave his name as William Aubrey, 41, of 1141 West Indiana avenue, Philadelphia. He was held in $1000 bail for a hearing tonight. Duvall was taken to Cooper Hospital by Harrison M. Davenport, 1209 Jackson street, where he is suffering from cuts and bruises.

Two Miss Death Sentence by Fraction of Inch; 'Sheiks' Confess Shooting Store Manager A mere fraction of an inch is all that saved the two "sheik" bandits, who robbed and shot a South Camden chain store manager, from death in the electric chair. And they are still in the shadow of the "chair" as John Cullen, 22, of 1088 Common road battles for his life on a tiny cot in the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital. If he dies the prosecutor's office will undoubtedly ask that the death sentence be imposed for the crime. A state law in New Jersey decrees that all those participating in a robbery or holdup in which an innocent man is killed are equally guilty. A .32-calibre bullet entered his chest and punctured a lung causing internal hemorrhages, which physicians say may yet cost his life. The bullet passed within a small fraction of an inch of his heart, and missed several arteries that would have caused instant death had they been hit. The bandits, who at first denied participating in the holdup, are John "Fingers" Makowski, 19, of 1476 Mt. Ephraim avenue and Stanley Jananaz, also known as Benjamin Janasz and Benny Jones, 18, of 1509 Newport street. Order Safe Opened They entered the American store at 1201 Lansdowne avenue just as Cullen the manager, and his two clerks were about to close up last Friday. Forcing the clerks into the rear of the store the bandits ordered Cullen to open the safe. One of the bandits emptied the cash register of about $5 in change, while the second man kept threatening Cullen with a gun. When he failed to work fast enough the bandit struck him and then attempted to strike him a second time. Cullen made an attempt to defend himself and the bandit shot him and fled. The two men were captured more than eight hours after the crime was committed when police took advantage of a "tip" given them by one of the store clerks. Claims Shot Was Accidental Although Cullen could not say which of the two had shot him, Jananaz, better known as Jones, admitted that he accidentally discharged his revolver and that the bullet struck Cullen when the latter sought to defend himself. Cullen PROSECUTOR WILL ASK FOR DEATH PENALTY Collingswood Burglar is Named By Grand Jury in Its Report Two Camden youths, nervous and incoherent in speech under the threat of the electric chair, today stood before Supreme Court Justice Frank T. Lloyd in criminal court and pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering a store manager to get $5 in receipts. They are John "Fingers" Makowski and Stanley B. Janasz, also known as Benny Jones. Both were white-lipped as they listened to the grave charges contained in indictments returned by the retiring September Grand Jury yesterday and read in court today by Assistant Prosecutor Rocco Palese. At the conclusion of the reading, Palese asked them how they would plead. Neither made answer, and Justice Lloyd then put the question to them. Their answer, made in a low, indistinct voice, was: "Not guilty." State Aid Asked Janasz is represented by Joseph A. Varbalow, but Makowski has no lawyer. His mother, a widow who has four other children, then made application to Justice Lloyd for the court to appoint counsel for her son at the state's expense, as she has not the money with which to procure legal defense for him. Prosecutor Baldwin will place the youths on trial probably in January, when the death penalty will be asked. They are accused of murdering John William Cullen, 22, of 1088 South Common road, Fairview, manager of an American Store at 1201 Lansdowne avenue, and father of a 13-month-old girl. The shooting occurred at the store on the night of November 28 and Cullen died two days later in the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital. On the day following the shooting the two captives are alleged to have confessed to the robbery and shooting. When arraigned in police court on atrocious assault and battery charges, they pleaded guilty. Jones admitted it was his gun that fired the fatal shot, but he said it was discharged accidentally. They are probably two of the youngest defendants in a Camden county murder case in which the electric chair has ever been asked by the state. Jones is 18 and resides at 1509 Newport street, while Makowski is 19 and lives at 1476 Mount Ephraim avenue.

MRS. MARY LIND DIES, LONG RESIDENT HERE Mrs. Mary A. Lind, after whom the city named a street, died last Thursday afternoon at her home, 2917 Mt. Ephraim avenue. She was 69 and suffered a heart attack a week ago. Mrs. Lind was born in LaSalle, Ind., and came to Camden 45 years ago. There were only a few houses in that part of the Whitman Park section of the city when Mrs. Lind took up her residence there. The owner of much ground in that section, Mrs. Lind built many homes and later gave a piece of ground to the city, the street being named Marylind street in her honor. Mrs. Lind is survived by two daughters, Mrs. O. W. Saunders, wife of a Camden physician; Mrs. Herbert Burgess; two sons, Clarence C. Lind, in the heating business here, and Charles McGarvey; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Margaret Carr, Camden, and two other sisters and two brothers, living in various parts of the country. The funeral will be held at the Schroeder chapel, Broadway and Royden street, at 8.30 a. m. Monday, followed at 9.30 o'clock by high mass at the Sacred Heart Church.

Camden Man Faces Tipsy Driving Count A 39-year-old Camden motorist was charged with drunken driving Thursday after his car was in an accident in Mt. Ephraim ave. near Fairview st. The drunken driving charge was placed against Charles Devaney, of the 200 block Cooper st., by Frank Matteo, 23, of 3108 Mt. Ephraim ave., operator of the second vehicle. Devaney was examined by Dr. Lee J. Hammet. Matteo was treated at West Jersey Hospital for body cuts. A companion, Miss Carol Robertson, 21, of 50 S. Holly ave., Maple Shade, was not injured. Devaney was released in $250 security for a hearing Dec. 2.

FREDERICK B. FAGAN Requiem high Mass for Frederick B. Fagan, 72, of 3145 Mount Ephraim ave., will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Church, Collings and Alabama rds. Friends will meet at 8 a.m. in the Myrtetus Funeral Home, 1530 Collings rd., where there will be a viewing Sunday night. Burial will be in New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr. Mr. Fagan died Wednesday in West Jersey Hospital. He was a retired machine tender for MacAndrews and Forbes Co., Camden. Surviving are his wife, Catherine; two sons, Ernest J. and Frederick J. of Camden; a daughter, Mrs. Irene Pelgrino of Plainville, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

CLAYTON PROMOTED TO CHIEF CLERK IN POLICE DEPARTMENT Commissioner Kobus Continues Move for Elimination of 'Acting' Officers In line with her plans to eliminate acting offices in the police department, Commissioner Mary W. Kobus last night announced the promotion of Patrolman George Clayton to chief clerk of the department. Clayton, whose promotion has been rumored since last December, has been acting chief clerk for two years and was named chief clerk, August 16. The promotion carries an increase in salary of $360, the position paying $2400 annually less the 15 percent economy reduction now in effect. As a patrolman Clayton received $2040 a year. The city commission is expected in the near future to pass a resolution giving the title of captain, as outlined in a city ordinance, and he then receives an additional increase of $180 in salary bringing the total to $2580. Clayton will act as chief of police in the absence of Chief Arthur Colsey. Clayton Record Lauded Commenting on Clayton's promotion, Commissioner Kobus said: "This is another step toward the elimination of acting officers in the police department and more are to follow in the future. It is my purpose to replace all acting jobs wherever and whenever it is possible. Clayton is a fine officer with a splendid record and his promotion will increase the efficiency and uphold the morale of the department." Clayton, who is 49 and lives at 912 Mt. Ephraim avenue, was appointed to the department on February 2, 1918, while Charles H. Ellis was mayor. He has served in nearly every capacity in the department, having been a motorcycle patrolman, mounted policeman, jailor, acting desk sergeant and acting detective. Clayton has been cited for bravery on several occasions. Capturing a fugitive bandit single handed at the Camden postoffice on December 20, 1932, was one of Clayton's most sensational exploits. The bandit, Robert I. Mears, was wanted in Delaware for more than a score of robberies and was spotted in Camden. Floors Irate Interferer Police were notified and Clayton was assigned to the postoffice to grab Mears when he appeared for mail. Clayton waited for several days before he was rewarded with the appearance of Mears. Not knowing whether the bandit was armed or not, Clayton pulled his gun. A bystander thought a holdup was in progress and Clayton was the culprit. Clayton was assaulted by the bystander, making the chances of the capture look slim, but he promptly "floored" the would-be rescuer with a punch and then took Mears to headquarters where he was held for Delaware authorities.

Camden's News Budget A Would-Be Suicide Who Spent His Wife's Money for Rum. Adolph Meyers, of 1109 Emma street, who attempted to kill himself late Saturday night, is locked up at the City Hall. He is rapidly improving and will be released to-day or to-morrow. To Chief of Police Dodd he said he had become down-hearted and had decided to kill his wife and then end his own existence. He changed his mind and shot himself. Mrs. Meyers says that on Saturday evening she gave her husband $1 to purchase groceries with and instead he bought whisky. When he came home he was under the influence of liquor and was only in the house a few minutes when he attempted to shoot himself. Lieutenant Stehr says that when he called at the house Meyers asked him for his revolver, saying it was better than his and would do the work. FIGHT AT A CHRISTENING. The baby of John Flerker, who resides at Mount Ephraim and Kaighn avenues, was christened yesterday, and as a result a half a dozen of the participants are now locked up in jail. After the water had been sprinkled on the child's head, those who had assembled to witness the ceremony started in drinking beer. Toward dark, by which time the entire party was under the influence of liquor, a free fight ensued. Officer Peters was summoned and arrested Fred Collett, Frank Dasky, Henry Raskoska, Jacob Schiecht and his son. They were locked up for a hearing to-day. AN APPROPRIATE SONG. About 150 persons from Philadelphia visited Camden yesterday to witness the baptism of a man and woman, who accompanied them. About 1,000 boys who had heard of the coming of the pair to be baptised were at Vaneman's wharf waiting for them. The pair were led out into the stream, and just as the minister dipped them into the water the boys commenced to sing "Down Went McGinty to the Bottom of the Sea." NOTES. The octogenarian services of the Methodist churches were concluded yesterday. The principal speaker of the day was Bishop Cyrus D. Foss. The spectators who were captured in the prize fight raid on Friday night will have a hearing before Mayor Pratt to-day. Rev. J. L. Sooy, of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted the services yesterday for the first time since his illness. William Haines and Herman Shaffer are locked up at the City Hall for stealing lumber from the yard of Volney G. Bennett. Harry Daniels is locked up for stealing $175 worth of shoes from the Philadelphia Shoe House.

Motorist Is Robbed By Two Youths Police are seeking two youths who allegedly robbed a motorist Saturday night while his car was halted for a red traffic light on Mt. Ephraim ave. at Line st. John Hamlett, of the 800 block Van Hook, told Ptl. Anthony DeVello a young man opened his car door and got in while he was waiting for the light to change. Hamlett said the thug had an automatic in his hand and ordered him to drive to Princess ave. and Line st. There another bandit met them and demanded his money,

Ephraim Avenue and Fairview Street, the Harris Terminal Complex. The fire involved a four story brick and corrugated steel warehouse (100 x 1000) containing miscellaneous industrial materials. Structure was fully involved upon arrival of Department Forces. As is evident in photo, the firebuilding was completely obscured from view by extremely heavy smoke conditions that were visible as far as thirty miles away. Elevated water tank in background, which is adjacent to firebuilding, is 100 feet tall. A massive effort by over 400 hundred manning some fifty pieces of equipment, was required to control the blaze.
