Van Hook Street

VAN HOOK STREET runs from the Delaware River to Fourth Street east across Broadway and Mount Ephraim Avenue to its end at Hallowell Lane, where the former Municipal Hospital for Contagious Diseases for the City of Camden stood. It is now known as Carl Miller Boulevard.

Arthur M. Sitley Stricken in Camden

Dr. Francis J. Bickers, of 1701 Fillmore Street, saw an elderly man fall from a stroke of apoplexy on Broadway near Vanhook Street; the man was recognized as Arthur M. Sitley, of 506 Broadway, founder of Sitley & Son's grain elevator at Sixth and Chelten Avenue, and his condition was critical.

Former Councilman John A. Furey, 65, a fifty-year resident of Camden's Eighth ward, died at his home at Broadway and Vanhook street after a long illness. He had also served as a freeholder, Excise Commissioner, policeman and constable.

Suspected Sniper Charges Frameup by ‘Real Phantom’

Eugene Marshall, 21, of 404 Jasper Street, admitted he was the man Camden police sought after an anonymous letter named him the "phantom sniper," but charged he was framed by an enemy he believed to be the real sniper. The same day a fire-alarm box at Kaighn Avenue and Hyde Park was drilled, and a weekend shot narrowly missed Joseph Carone.

Clarence Franchetti of 1231 Van Hook Street and his helper were held up by two armed bandits on Ridge Pike near Conshohocken, Pennsylvania and robbed of $50.

Assault charges against Police Inspector John V. Wilkie, stemming from the July 1936 RCA strike riot, were dismissed after the complainant failed to appear for the eleventh time. Patrolman Earl Wright had made the original arrest.

Edwin Stanley Wirtz (1914–1975), son of Camden policeman Stanley R. Wirtz and grandson of Camden fireman James McDade, was appointed to the Camden Fire Department in October 1943 and served 22 years, retiring in October 1965 as an inspector in the Fire Marshal's office.
