Rowe Street is in East Camden. It runs in an eastward direction from 506 North 32nd to North 35th Street, north of Mitchell Street.

Arch Street

At one point known as Plum Street, Arch Street is situated in downtown Camden, positioned between Federal Street and Market Street. In the past, this street extended from Delaware Avenue to North 5th Street, serving as a prominent passageway. However, the passage of time has seen various developments encroach upon Arch Street, causing its existence to fade from view.

Arch Street held significant establishments, including the Collings Carriage Company, later transformed into the Campbell Soup Company garage. The thoroughfare was also home to Camden Commercial College and several other enterprises. Among the notable bars were Oetzel's Saloon, the Arch Cafe, and the Genova Cafe. The Cooperson Brothers' auto body shop utilized a building on Arch Street.

One of the most distinguished edifices on Arch Street was the former Camden Fire Department building at the intersection of 5th and Arch Street. Additionally, the Masonic Temple occupied a spot on 4th Street, adjacent to Arch, until its demolition to make room for the Camden Fire Department's administrative structure.

Merritt & Company stood at Front and Arch Streets in the 1900s and 1910s.

At the northwest corner of Front and Arch Streets, Knowles & Anderson, canners and preservers (William H. Knowles and Abraham Anderson), operated from 1880 to 1885. The Anderson Preserving Company (Abraham Anderson, President) followed from 1885 to 1901, and the Anderson Food Company (John T. Cox, President) from 1902 to 1907.

Joseph Genovese immigrated from Italy first residing in Mays Landing with his uncle. His wife Mary also immigrated. The photo is of him standing outside his barber shop holding his daughter Angie, circa 1917. Mary Genovese passed in the late 50s and he sold the house in mid-60s, buying a home in Merchantville. Joseph Genovese fathered 10 girls, never owned a car and in his later years worked as a security guard at Campbell Soup which was directly across the street from his barber shop and home.

Camden Courier-Post, June 15, 1933 — Jack Press, 28, of 322 Arch Street Camden, was fined $25 and costs on a charge of malicious mischief preferred by Mrs. Mabel Durham, of Park avenue. Mrs. Durham charged that Press, during a visit to her home, went upstairs and cut up two dresses and a coat.

These postcards, dating from about 1905, show Federal and Arch Streets from Broadway and Federal Street. Arch Street is the right fork, visible in the background. On the left in both cards stood the Munger & Long Department Store, known as J.C. Penney's from the 1930s through the 1960s. To the right stood the Camden County Courthouse, which stood from 1904 through the early 1950s.

Thirty-Fifth Street runs from the Delaware River south to River Avenue. The street picks up again east of the Pavonia railroad switching yard to Fairfax Street. Once on the other side of Westfield Avenue, 35th Street runs for one block between Merriel and Rosedale Avenues. Interrupted again by what were until recently railroad tracks, 35th Street starts once again on the southern side of Rosedale Avenue and runs to Federal Street, then on for three blocks to Highland Avenue at the Pennsauken border.

As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 35th Street above Federal, and South 35th below.

I grew up on North 35th Street and attended Henry H. Davis Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson High School. My girlfriend lived on Merriel Avenue and we walked through the park on our way to Wilson every morning and afternoon. I loved the Dudley Grange library and was saddened to learn of the fire. It was such a quiet haven for young and old. I remember the beautiful stone exterior, the creaky stairs to the 2nd floor children's room, and the almost reverent quiet of the main floor reading room. The librarian sat perched high on a pedestal type desk and wore coke bottle thick glasses on a chain— but had a heart of gold. I became a librarian and lament the lovely sense of serenity and peace that you don't see in libraries too much.

The home was owned by my Grandfather James David Willmott and Annie. James passed away the year before I was born in 1957. Grandmom lived in the home until the early 70's can't remember exactly. She died at home and my Father and 2 sisters were there at the time. I spent a lot of time in that house before my school days since my Mom and Dad worked and Grandmom watched me during the daytime. I recall every nook and cranny of that house and often dream of it.

An early undated, most likely during the 1880's, photo of the Albert Robert Reed home and residents at 18 N. 35th St., Camden, NJ. Also attached is a picture Albert Robert Reed who owned and operated a dairy at the location with his wife Sallie.

The picture of the house is dated based on information from Edith Reed McIlvaine, the deceased granddaughter of Albert (GGF of my wife Betty (WWHS'60) and daughter of Edith). The people in the picture are all believed to be Albert Reed's family.

The stern woman on the left is Hannah Acker Reed, mother of Albert. The younger and maybe pregnant(?) woman on the right is Sallie Beamish Reed, wife of Albert. The youngsters (sons of Albert and Sallie) outside are most likely Beldon Willard Reed with bike, Albert Centennial Reed, left, behind fence, with Frank Albert (Edith's father) sitting on the step behind the fence. Albert's fourth son, Wm Few, is most likely in the “hanger” so to speak at the time of this picture. A fifth and last son, Clarence was no doubt, in the “planning stages.

My father Jim Wright Sr. and my mother Rita Wright, nee Genovese moved into the home in 1949 and remained there until about 1975. Dad and Mom raised 4 boys, Jim, Dennis, Joe and Michael and my sister Rita. I worked at Cartun Hardware and was the guy who pulled the fire alarm back in December of 1961 when Irv Cartun's warehouse caught fire. I have great memories of Camden when I grew up in the 50's. The Wright family all attended St. Joe's and Camden Catholic. The Genovese family all attended Camden Catholic as well.

Leonard F. Garbrecht

Leonard F. Garbrecht was born in Palmyra, New Jersey on September 13, 1910. He was the third child of Frederick L. Garbrecht Sr. and his wife Annie, coming after sister Eulalia and brother Fred Jr. By 1914 the family had moved to 2614 Federal Street in East Camden. The family was still residing at the Federal Street address in August of 1918 when older brother Frederick Jr., then a riveter at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard, registered for the draft. Sadly, Frederick Garbrecht Sr. passed away before January of 1920. The family was still at 2614 Federal Street at that time.

By 1924 the Garbrechts had moved to 2213 Federal Street. Annie Garbrecht ran a boardinghouse there, and older brother Frederick Jr. had been appointed to the Camden Police Department, where he served well into the 1930s. Sister Eulalia had married Camden police officer Edwin Mills; they lived across the street at 2214 Federal. By 1927 Frederick Garbrecht Jr. soon married and set up a home of his own at 1149 North 36th Street in Cramer Hill. That year's City Directory shows Annie Garbrecht had set up a hair salon at 4 North 27th Street, next to the Boulevard Grille and across the street from the East Camden firehouse. This not being the best of locations perhaps for that particular line of business, she and Leonard Garbrecht were no longer there by 1929.

The 1929 City Directory shows Mrs. Garbrecht and her son at 2627 Cramer Street in East Camden. By April of 1930 they had moved to 482 Boyd Street. Leonard Garbrecht worked a variety of jobs in these years, as a plumber's helper and at a gas station.

The 1940 City Directory lists Leonard and Frederick Garbrecht at 3255 Rowe Street in East Camden.

Leonard Garbrecht was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on June 12, 1941 and reported for duty with Engine Company 10 on Morgan Boulevard four days later. He appears to have briefly lived at 19 Kendall Boulevard in Oaklyn, New Jersey with his wife Rita, as he is listed twice in 1947's City Directory, once at this address and again in Camden. The 1947 Camden City Directory also shows Leonard Garbrecht living at 3253 Rowe Street in East Camden. Brother Frederick Garbrecht Jr. was still residing next door at 3255 Rowe Street. Leonard Garbrecht was promoted to Captain and assigned to Engine Company 1 at 409 Pine Street on November 30, 1953. On June 17, 1954 Captain Garbrecht was reassigned once again, this time to Engine Company 11 on North 27th Street in Cramer Hill.

On December 1, 1955 Captain Garbrecht left the Fire Department on a disability pension. He was reinstated on March 2, 1957 and returned to service with Engine Company 2. 1958 saw temporary assignments to Ladder Company 3 in East Camden on January 18 followed by a return to Engine Company 2 on February 27. A week later, on March 4, 1958 Captain Garbrecht was assigned to Engine Company 3 at 1815 Broadway, where he served until retiring once again on disability on January 15, 1960. The 1959 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory and Camden Fire department records show that Leonard F. Garbrecht had moved to 1621 Olympia Road in Fairview.

By the fall of 1969 Leonard Garbrecht had moved to Oaklyn, New Jersey. Older brother Frederick had moved to Woodbury, New Jersey; he died in 1971. Leonard Garbrecht died on January 23, 2000 and was survived by his wife Rita, three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

His promotion to captain was reported in the Camden Courier-Post of November 30, 1953; that article is published separately as 3 Hosemen Made Fire Captains.

Cleaner Plant Blast Injures Fire Captain

Fire Capt. Leonard Garbrecht, 49, of 1621 Olympia rd., was admitted to West Jersey Hospital with head injuries Monday after a blast during a fire in a dry cleaning plant at 2201 S. 8th st.

Garbrecht, of Engine Company 3, Broadway and Emerald st., was struck by the door of a dry cleaning tumbler which blew off as he entered the Mechanics Overall Service, Inc., plant with other firemen. They confined the blaze to the machine.

Acting District Chief Edward Michalak said the fire apparently was caused by static electricity. Pressure in the tumbler caused the blast, he said. Garbrecht, struck on the right side of the head, was thrown against steam radiators and was semiconscious when police took him to the hospital, Michalak said.

He was also a charter member of the Camden City Firefighters Local #788.
