Herbert J. “Jack” Schott was born on July 6, 1923, in New Jersey. His mother, Anna Baxter Schott, was the daughter of Herbert Baxter Sr., a member of the Camden Fire Department appointed in the late 1910s. His father, John C. “Jack” Schott Jr., served in the Camden Police Department during the 1930s.
By 1930, Anna Schott had separated from her husband and was living with her parents and brothers. The whereabouts of young Herbert at this time remain unclear. Herbert Baxter Sr. moved to 2791 Yorkship Road by 1931 and later to 940 Thurman Street. John C. Schott Jr., who lived at 1240 Kaighn Avenue, passed away on February 6, 1937, at the age of 31.
In the 1940 Census, Herbert Baxter Sr. had retired from the Fire Department and moved with his wife to Wildwood, New Jersey. The Census lists Herbert and Elizabeth Baxter along with their grandson, 16-year-old Herbert J. Schott. Herbert Baxter Sr. later returned to Camden, where he passed away in February 1969, survived by his son Herbert W. Baxter Jr. and grandson Herbert J. Schott.
After World War II, Herbert J. Schott relocated to Camden. The 1946 City Directory lists him at 486 North 35th Street in East Camden. In 1948, his uncle Herbert W. Baxter Jr. joined the Camden Fire Department, where he served until his retirement in 1966 as Chief Fire Marshal.
Herbert J. Schott joined the Camden Fire Department on January 17, 1949, and was initially assigned to Engine Company 9 at North 27th and Federal Streets. He later served alongside his uncle at Engine Company 11 on North 27th Street in Cramer Hill and, in 1961, worked as Chief’s Aide to District Chief Godfrey Patterson.
The 1956 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory lists Schott at 3802 High Street. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he resided at 459 North 32nd Street. After Camden lifted its residency requirements for police and firefighters, he moved out of Camden County.
By 1977, Herbert J. Schott had reached the rank of Captain. He served until his retirement on February 1, 1981. Later, he lived in Wildwood, where he spent his final years. Herbert J. Schott passed away on November 5, 1997.
