AKA Ann Street
Maurice Street, formerly known as Ann Street, stretches southward from 742 Mount Vernon Street, crossing Chestnut Street and Sycamore Street, until it reaches 737 Kaighn Avenue. Interestingly, for much of the past century, the primary address on Maurice Street has been 1130, which in 1947 housed the Wesley A.M.E. Church Annex.
A peculiar aspect of Maurice Street is the uncertainty surrounding its name. It first appears in the 1878 Camden City Directory under the name Ann Street. However, by the time the 1904-1905 City Directory was published, it had been renamed Maurice Street. While Maurice Street is documented in the 1924 City Directory, the 1947 City Directory reverts to labeling it as Ann Street. Complicating matters further, street signs since the late 1980s have displayed variations in spelling, with instances of both “Murice” and “Maurice” observed. Given the historical context of the period and the inconsistencies in Camden’s Public Works department, misspellings are not uncommon.
Situated at the northeast corner of Sycamore and Maurice Streets stands the Wesley A.M.E. Church. Initially known as the Zion Wesley Church, a frame church was constructed at this location in 1853. Subsequently, this structure was demolished, and the current edifice was erected in 1880. Between 1890 and 1906, the church transitioned to become a part of the African Methodist Episcopal Church organization, as indicated in the 1906 City Directory, which lists it as the Wesley A.M.E. Church.
