William M. May (1888–1935), known as "Indian Bill," lived in East Camden for more than two decades. He first came to public attention in December 1910 after a suicide attempt following Elsie Staley's rejection of his marriage proposal, and remained a recurring figure in Camden newspaper reports for the next 25 years.
Burns Street was in Camden's Poet's Row neighborhood, named for Robert Burns. Three blocks of row homes built in the 1890s, all destroyed in the catastrophic Poet's Row fire of August 1972.
Berwick Street is in East Camden, running through the 2000 and 2100 blocks between Rand Street and Marlton Pike; the street was extended to South 20th Street after the McGuire Gardens housing project was built in 1954.
2nd Street extends north-south between Front Street and 3rd Street, running parallel to the Delaware River until Mechanic Street. In the early 1970s, several buildings were cleared on the east side of North 2nd Street below Mickle Street to make way for the Royal Court townhomes and Mickle Tower senior citizens apartment building.
CHARLES L." SHAD" ALCOTT was born in New Jersey around 1857. The Census indicates July of 1858. Sorting him out can be confusing as there was a Charles M. Alcott, born February of 1857, who lived in Camden at the same time.
JOSEPH "JOE" ACQUARO grew up in Camden, New Jersey. He was the son of Biagio "Benny" Acquaro and the former Frances Petrella.
BIAGIO 'BENNY' ACQUARO was born in Philadelphia PA on March 22, 1906. His mother Nunziata passed away at the age 45 when Benny was only two years old, on August 22, 1908. His father Giuseppe took him and his two sisters, Mary and Catherine, to Italy.
