Private First Class Chester J. Gdowik of 947 Jackson Street, Camden, served with the 6th Armored Infantry Battalion, 1st Armored Division. A South Camden native who worked in the machine shop at New York Shipbuilding before his induction, he was killed in action in Italy on May 25, 1944.
Arthur Cuellen Batten (1904–1972), known to his fellow firefighters as Artie, joined the Camden Fire Department on March 4, 1927 and served until his retirement on February 28, 1969, rising to captain of Rescue Company 1 and acting battalion chief. He lived for many years at 1132 North 22nd Street in Cramer Hill and invented the un-patented ring cutter used by the rescue company to remove finger jewelry.
Seaman First Class Benjamin Wallace Bonk of Camden, NJ served aboard the submarine USS Escolar (SS-294), lost with all hands in the Yellow Sea in late 1944. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery.
