Contracts for 306 Homes Here Awarded by Housing Group Brooklyn Firm Gets General Work at Ablett Village on Moro Phillips Tract — Construction Due to Start on May 16 The Camden Housing Authority yesterday awarded contracts for the construction of 306 homes on the Moro Phillips tract on State street west of River avenue. The total of the bids for four contracts was $1,224,841. The government has set up $1,700,000 as the cost. The bids accepted yesterday were for the general contract, electricity, plumbing and heating and include only the actual amount of the cost of construction. The balance of $457,000 has been set aside by the authority for the purchase of 26 acres of land, architect's fees, and the installation of gas ranges and refrigerators. The project will have a frontage on State street of 1300 feet and on River avenue 800 feet. The houses are to be two-story brick with three to five rooms and baths. They will be rented to defense workers. The rentals have not been decided but will be on par with those charged at Branch Village. Work to Start May 16 Work on the project is scheduled to begin May 16. Specifications call for completion of the contract in 108 working days. Horace R. Dixon, executive director of the authority, said the government approved the building of a community center and workshop. He said these additions were not anticipated. Dixon explained the project would begin at State street and River avenue and continue west to Cooper river. The tract along Cooper river which is usually flooded at high tide will be filled in for playground purposes, Dixon said. The project will be known as the William Stanley Ablett Village, named after a World War I veteran. Caristo Low Bidder The low bidder on the general contract was the Caristo Construction Company, Brooklyn, N.Y., whose estimate was $1,016,000. Two other firms bid and the highest was $1,195,000. The electrical contract went to the Strang Electric Company, Camden, on a bid of $36,985, in a field of eight competitors with the highest at $60,000. The Tully Plumbing and Heating Company, New York, received the contract for plumbing on a bid of $124,896. The heating contract was awarded to the Installation Company, Mamaroneck, N.Y., on a bid of $46,960.
